As we approach 2011 IFDC in Las Vegas it was this article* written almost 3 years ago to the day that changed my direction in collection . Having followed Denise Van Patten and the ABOUT Barbie site/page for some time reading all the great information and surfing the many links on Barbie.
Looking back now as I have been getting involved with the doll community over the last year wanted to just take a moment to say Thank you to Denise for her tireless work to keep this site relevant and enjoyable. I am sure Denise would concur what I may see as work she may feel it is a labor of love. This information on Barbie over the years has been vital to how and what to collect. Now I had been collecting Barbie from 1995-2003 most being NRFB. For reasons other than space that I won't go into put them up in storage. Taking a much needed break from Mattel. Can anyone here relate?
I remember waiting on a friend in Barnes and Noble at the Magazine stand I happened upon a glossy magazine called FDQ. Never had I seen a magazine devoted to dolls other than Barbie Bazaar. Standing with this magazine in hand as I turned to the next page my adrenaline racing then my jaw dropped to the point where I had to sit down.
STUNNED EXCITED and Confused could not believe there were dolls other than Barbie. Where had I been. How could I have missed this? I now know the power a line of dolls can have with tunnel vision and closed minded thinking can occur not allowing other kinds of dolls or ideas to enter.
I had known about life like dolls and baby dolls etc, but High Fashion dolls coming in sizes of 17 inches blew my mind. It amazed me at how I never ventured out of my comfort zone. In 2003 a Tyler and Gene Doll was sent to me by a friend who knew I loved dolls but thought I would like something different. Just days before stored my collection as I had mentioned earlier.
Burned out from all things Barbie my interest meter was null and void. So as crazy as this sounds I didn't even open them up to look, instead just put them in the closet along with my Barbies.
This post of Denise's casual encounter with her first Sybarite sealed my fate some 5 years later upon seeing the Sybarites in Haute doll that afternoon in Barnes and Noble which made my decision to begin collecting again. Filled with a new sense of Joy and wonder I got home and searched Sybarite doll on the About/Denise page and this was the article which came up.
Reading this post was thrilling until it got to the price of the Sybarites. Within seconds my heart stopped pounding and the joy and wonder left the building. But the Sybarite Seed had been planted and for two years I tried to figure out how I could afford such a delicacy.
Living on a fixed income and having a partner of 28 years who BTW was having none of my explanation or excitement regarding these beautiful dolls. So in his humorous disgust said you have a room full of dolls you never even opened what in God's name do you need more for.
AAAhhh HHHaaaa that's it!!! Lets just end this story with Ebay, Barbie and ALL accessories, with a strong conviction and dream of owning a Sybarite.
